Remote Control Monster Trucks

Remote control monster trucks are among the most popular radio control toys, and with good reason-they're so much FUN! Some people like to have tractor pulls, some like to go over rocks and ramps, and others just like splashing in the mud. You can get a good quality electric or nitro ready-to-run vehicle from a hobby shop, or you can build one up from a kit. Naturally, most people start off with a ready-to-run electric model.

Okay, you can't buy the Massive V in a hobby shop! There are a lot of other models to choose from nonetheless. Many remote control trucks are 1/10 or 1/8 scale size, so they may be 400-510 mm long (16-20 inches). There are also some 1/5 scale gas models that can be purchased ready-to-run.

Redcat Racing, HPI, Traxxas, and CEN Racing are four major manufacturers for hobby grade ready-to-run remote control monster trucks. Redcat Racing has some nice "budget hobby" models including the popular Rockslide RS10 rock crawler and the new Rockslide RS10 XT. The HPI E-Savage and E-Savage Sport models are also good quality trucks. If you are looking at remote control trucks for kids, be sure to check the HPI Wheely King. Easy wheelies are always a big hit with the kids! The Traxxas Stampede is another super cool, top selling line of remote control monster trucks.

One thing to consider, depending on how you want to use a truck, is whether or not it has waterproof electronics. Water and electronics don't play well together and the electronics for a number of vehicles are not really waterproofed. If a truck does have waterproof components such as a waterproof electronic speed control, this will undoubtedly be advertised in its list of features. Expect to pay a bit more for remote control monster trucks with waterproof electronics. Remember that you may still need to service the bearings after being in water. It would be best to check with your dealer or vehicle manufacturer to see what maintenance they suggest to be sure you don't miss anything. Many people use an air blower to help clean and dry their vehicles after running in mud puddles.

A second important factor is the power source. In general, most people start with electric models because there is less maintenance. Others really want to dive right in with nitro for a monster truck and they enjoy the noise and fumes as part of the experience! Many hobbyists do prefer nitro fueled trucks for their performance, but bear in mind that nitro engines must be properly broken in and require more maintenance. Do your research before buying! Especially if the truck is bought as a Christmas or birthday present and you are a first time hobbyist, it may be tempting to cut corners with the break-in and run it hard straight out of the box. Don't-you'll soon regret it.

A nice thing about nitro engines is that some manufacturers have a lifetime engine replacement program. No, you don't get new engines for free but you can get replacement engines at reduced cost. You will need to return your old engine and you normally need to be the original vehicle owner to qualify. Check with your manufacturer for details. This is another reason to keep those receipts!

The main thing to remember when looking at remote control trucks is to have fun! There are lots of good trucks to choose from these days.
